The Yellow Room

“You will tomorrow have a dozen on the trapeze, Miss, for disgracing yourself in this beastly manner; you will write out fifty times, ‘I peed like a mare before my uncle.’ And for the next fortnight you will only pee twice every twenty-four hours. And now come and kiss the rod and say: ‘Thank you, my dear Uncle, for the flogging you have given me.’”

The Yellow Room is a classic tale of Victorian discipline. When eighteen-year-old Alice Darvell’s widowed aunt dies, the prudish girl moves from Yorkshire to live with another uncle, Sir Edward Bosmere. At the baronet’s sumptuous residence she finds that her life changes dramatically and any form of disobedience results in an extremely painful visit to The Yellow Room.

The Cadière Case

The curious case of Cadière versus Girard was one of the greatest and most vehemently discussed scandals of the early eighteenth century. It tells the story of Catharine Cadière and her relationship with a Roman Catholic priest, who frequent flogged her in an ongoing sexual relationship in the south of France.
