To take down the culprit's pants oneself is somehow a "warmer" act (i.e. more maternal in style) than to order them taken down (which is governessy or at worst institutional). To take them down rapidly and efficiently conveys different signals (about what is to come) than trousers taken down with prolonged, even tantalising, deliberation. A brisk unbuttoning may convey, and be intended to convey, the intimation of a brisk, summary punishment to follow; and so it may often fall out. Similarly, a languid, drawn-out déculottage generally sends strongwarnings of a prolonged and excruciating chastisement to follow in good time. In neither case are the concomitants inevitable-indeed, a canny mistress will vary the mixture from time to time in order to avoid the sin of predictability. How one performs the task is a matter of taste, style-and individual appropriateness, since circumstances are seldom identical.
