Madame often uses it on me because of all her implements it has the largest smacking area—and my bottom, like the rest of me, is big. It makes a very loud noise and is excruciatingly painful.
By the time I had returned with it she had got out of bed and put on a filmy housecoat. “Hurry up!” she said. I knelt and presented it to her in the way she had taught me.
“Lift your skirts,” said my mistress, standing back, “and kneel on the bed.”
