	On tiptoe I crept up to the door of the punishment chamber and with immense excitement listened to events being played out inside. I heard the threatening hiss of the birch rod cutting through the air. I heard the sound of it whipping around poor Arabella’s sore and naked posteriors. I heard her screams and howls of distress. I heard her pitiful sobs and pleadings. I heard it all. It filled me with a voluptuary delight. Every cry and every stroke filled me with rapture. At the very first blow, my right hand disappeared under my dress with an unseemly haste; my fingers feverishly stimulated my aching parts. Faster and faster I rubbed, aroused not only by the sounds of my friend being whipped, but also by the stinging sensations in my own hindquarters. Reaching a blissful climax as the eighteenth stroke fell, I made good my escape.’ Famously sentenced to imprisonment for six years with hard labour for ‘committing serious moral offences against children’ in 1924, this first part of Edith Cadivec’s biography tells of her early childhood years in Austria and how after the death of her mother, the birch rod was introduced into her life by her new stepmother. In her adolescent years, both she and her sister attend a convent boarding school in Graz where the nuns have no hesitation in strapping errant girls to the whipping bench and administering a sound birching! At that time she also discovers her preference for members of her own sex. After leaving school, she attempts to commit suicide and, following a slow recovery, takes up teaching in a convent in Paris. There she meets Sister Marie-Claire, a keen flagellant, and together they take great pleasure in administering discipline to their female pupils. After some unsatisfactory relationships with men, she returns to Austria with her daughter, prior to setting up a language school of her own.
